Chapter 1 -- General Info

1.1 What are shiny Pokemon?

Shiny Pokemon are Pokemon who have a different color then their regular version has. If you watched the Pokemon series on television, Ash's Butterfree left  to go off with a pink Butterfree (which was a shiny)

1.2 How can you recognize one?

That's not too hard. First of all, they have a different color. Some shinies are more easy to differ from their non-shiny form, e.g. a shiny Murkrow is purple/pink while its regular form is black. With some others you'll have more problems recognizing them, e.g. a shiny Abra is only a bit more white then an ordinary Abra. Secondly, a shiny Pokemon makes a sparkling sound when he enters the battle and their will be created a circle of yellow stars on him (this isn't permanent; it only takes a second). If you think you caught a shiny one, just check his stats to be sure. If there are 3 plus signs next to its gender, congratulations on your new shiny Pokemon then. If their aren't any plus signs, its just a regular Pokemon.

1.3 What are DVs?

This is something you don't have to read, 'cause you don't have to know about DVs to obtain a shiny Pokemon. However, if you don't read this, you'll just have to believe everything I say in chapters 3.3 and 3.4.

DV stands for Deter Value (also called IVs). Its something they use to express how good the stats of a Pokemon are. Each stat has a different DV: HP, attack, defence, special (only one DV for both special attack and special defence) and speed. DVs range from 0 to 15 (~ 0000 till 1111 in binary language).

Good DVs are important to have good stats. At level 100, a Pokemon with an attack DV of 15 will have 30 more attack points than the same Pokemon with an attack DV of 0.

Most people now think: Great! How can I have max DVs for all of my Pokemon? Simple answer: you cant! A Pokemon with all DVs of 15 are more rare than shiny Pokemon, thrust me. The moment you cross a Pokemon (either you receive an egg or you enter a wild one battle or you are given a Pokemon) the DVs are set for the rest of that Pokemon's life.

To be complete, I have to mention that the HP DV is composed by the other DVs.

1.4 Whats the link between shinyness and DVs?

Good question. In G/S/C the link is quite easy: a shiny Pokemon has a speed DV of 10, a special DV of 10, a defence DV of 10, an attack DV of 2, 3, 6, 7, 10, 11, 14 or 15 and thus a HP DV of either 0 or 8 (its not important how this is calculated; just accept it ). This is how your game says whether a Pokemon is shiny or not. They first calculate their DVs (when encountering one in the wild) and then they say: its shiny or it isn't, not visa versa.

When you hear people say: Shiny Pokemon suck, 'cause they can never achieve max stats!, they're only half correct. Shiny Pokemon can never have max DVs and therefore no max stats, so that's true. But If you have one with an attack DV of 11 or 15, your HP DV is 8 then and your shiny Pokemon is pretty good (at least more than average). In fact, shiny Pokemon are approximately at 2/3 of the max stats and most Pokemon don't get that high, ya know?

Chapter 2 -- Obtaining Shiny Pokemon

The moment you've all been waiting for: how can we easily get a shiny one? Ill give as much information as possible here.

2.1 Shiny Gyarados

Most people will already know this but I'll write it anyway.

While playing through the game, you'll find yourself at Lake of Rage (north of Mahogany Town). It is said that this lake was built by rampaging Gyarados and if you look carefully, you can still see one floating in the middle of the lake. Surf towards him and save. Talk to him and when he enters battle, he will be red and their will be some stars sparkling round him. This is the shiny Pokemon almost everybody has.

2.2 Shiny ditto

This is a glitch where you need 2 GBs for. You'll also need a red/blue/yellow cartridge and a link cable.

First, make sure you have any shiny Pokemon on your G/S/C game that appears in R/B/Y and which can learn mimic in R/B/Y (Gyarados is good). Transfer him to a R/B/Y game (the trick will go faster if you delete all his moves but one weak move like leer). On your R/B/Y game, you won't notice any more apart from that your Pokemon is shiny but don't worry, if you transfer him back, he will be shiny again.

Teach him TM 31 (mimic) and go find yourself a wild ditto. Use mimic to learn transform. Ditto will use transform. Let your shiny Pokemon transform into ditto. Wait 'till ditto transforms again. Catch ditto. Transfer him to G/S/C. You now have a blue shiny ditto. Congrats. (The most important thing is that ditto needs to transform twice)

2.3 Encounter in the wild

Many sites say that if you go to a certain place at a certain time, you'll find yourself a different colored [insert pokemon name]. This is NOT true! The odds of encountering one in the wild are very, very low (extremely). Many people who finished the game multiple times haven't even encountered one yet!

As said before, the defence DV of a shiny Pokemon is 10. When you encounter a wild Pokemon, this is one of the things your game randomly chooses. Since their are 16 different DVs (0 to15), you have a 1:16 chance of encountering a Pokemon with a defence DV of 10.

Pretty much the same counts for the special DV: it should be 10 and there are 16 DVs in total, so you have again a 1:16 chance of finding a wild Pokemon with a special DV of 10.

Same for the speed DV: 1:16 of finding one with a speed DV of 10.

For the attack DV (as said before), a shiny Pokemon can have 2, 3, 6, 7, 10, 11, 14 or 15. Since there are 16 DVs in total, you'll have a 1:2 (or 8:16 chance if you like) of finding one with one of those values.

You don't have to care about the HP DV, 'cause if the other DVs are OK for the Pokemon to be shiny, so will the HP DV be ('cause it is calculated from the other DVs).

Lets summarise a bit: 1:16:16:16:2 equals a 1:8192 chance of finding a shiny Pokemon in the wild. That's not much, I know! This is all about luck too: some people find 3 shinies when finishing the game once, while others who finish it multiple times and have hundreds of hours of game play, won't even see one...

Some sites also say that you can't run from as shiny Pokemon but I cant confirm this 'cause I'm not that stupid to try to flee from one.

2.4 Shiny breeding

This is something most people don't know and a lot of those people won't even belief this to be true, but I can assure you: it is true.

OK, like the title says, you can actually breed for them. But how? There are some options.

a)    You have a shiny ditto

This is the most easiest one, I guess. First I'll have to give ya some basic info on breeding in general.

Moves can be passed, but with ditto as a parent, this won't help you much (there's no such thing like Pikachu! Transform!).

DVs can be passed too!!! At least some of them...
DVs are always passed from the parent of the opposite gender. If the egg hatches into a female Pokemon, some DVs will be inherited from the male parent. If the egg hatches into a male Pokemon, some DVs will be inherited from the female parent. If one of the parents is ditto, the inherited DVs will always be from ditto (ALWAYS!).

What DVs are passed down now?

  • Defence DV is passed directly: if you breed with a shiny ditto, the baby will ALWAYS have a defence DV of 10.
  • Special DV is passed directly half of the time. The other half of the time the game will either add or subtract 8 from the value (according to whether your DV is below or above 8; DV of 0-7 +8, DV of 8-15 -8). In case of the shiny ditto, your offspring will have either a special DV of 10 or 2 (NO other values are possible).
  • That's about it. Like with wild Pokemon, attack and speed DVs are randomly created and again HP DV is calculated from the others.
  • Summary:
                1:1 chance for def. DV
                1:2 chance for spec. DV
                1:16 chance for spd. DV
                1:2 chance for att. DV
                ------------------------
                1:64 (!) chance for a shiny offspring
  • 1:64 chance! You heard me right! 1:64! That's a lot better than the wild encounters of course, but it ain't godlike either. But, except for the gamesharkers, this is pretty much the best chance you'll ever get to obtain your fave shiny (sorry for the unbreedable Pokemon).

b)    You have a random breedable shiny

This is pretty much the same since the DVs can be passed down as well... but this time well have to keep in mind the odds of the genders... Lets give some examples:

1: You have a shiny male Geodude. You want to breed him with an Onix, 'cause you've always wanted the gold Steelix. So you put your shiny Geodude in day-care. With him you put a female Onix. What are the odds now? Lets look at the odds of the offspring being female first. Since we want him to be shiny, he needs to inherit the DVs of Geodude and therefore be female. Those odds are 50-50, so you have a 1:2 chance for the baby Onix to be female. The rest of the calculation is the same as with ditto: 1:64 chance of shinyness.
This results in a 1:128 chance. That's still good.

2: You found yourself a shiny female Miltank and are planning on breeding him desperately with any Pokemon. Too bad! The offspring will always be a Miltank and thus will always be female (there's no such thing like a male Miltank!). In this case, you cant pass shinyness... L

3: You have found a shiny female Clefairy. You want to breed him so you can have a shiny male one to breed with your beloved Chansey. Too bad -- Clefairy only has a 1:4 chance of being male so the odds are like 1:256. This isn't that much anymore, I can assure you that, so you'll better want to do something else in the time you would've wasted...

Some general breeding tips:
1: only take one active Pokemon with you and five eggs. This is the fastest way to hatch one, although it'll probably still take some time.
2: don't give up to easily! 1:64 isn't that big too! Don't be disappointed if you don't have a shiny one immediately.
3: start with a Pokemon that doesn't require a lot of steps to hatch (e.g. a pidgey = 3,840 steps). Don't try to go for Pokemon like Eevee (although I did this). You could end up frustrated.

Chapter 3 -- Questions & Answers

Here I posted some of the questions I foresaw you from asking them. If you have any other questions, mail to psycho2048@hotmail.com (be sure to write Shiny FAQ as subject).

Q: If you evolve a shiny Pokemon, will it still be shiny?
A: Yes. Don't worry about evolving them! If a Pokemon evolves, his DVs don't change and so his shinyness wont too.

Q: If you transfer a Pokemon to R/B/Y, is it shiny there?
A: If you look at DVs only, it is shiny in theory. But there won't be any difference between an ordinary one on your R/B/Y game. If you transfer him back, it'll be shiny again.

Q: If you trade a shiny Pokemon in-game (e.g. a Drowzee) with a dude (in case of Drowzee, this should be the Machop you receive in goldenrod city mart), will it be shiny again?
A: I don't know, but I think so. I'm still investigating this. (if anyone can confirm this to me through e-mail, thanks)

Q: If you transfer a shiny Pokemon to your R/B/Y game and trade him with a dude (e.g. a Spearow for Farfetch'd), will the received Pokemon be shiny when you put him back on your G/S/C game?
A: Again, I'm still working on this. I forgot to clone my shiny Abra and now he's already an |Alakazam. Update is probably coming.

Q: If you transfer a Pokemon from R/B/Y to G/S/C, is there a possibility that it is shiny?
A: Yes. You have the same odds as encountering one in the wild. You can of course use a DV calculator to see if he has shiny stats in R/B/Y already.

Q: My pokemon won't make any eggs! Did I do something wrong?
A: Talk to one of the Pokemon in day care. If it says: "It appears to care for the other Pokemon" "It shows interest in the other Pokemon." or "It is friendly with the other Pokemon.", then an egg will be produced sooner or later; just keep walking around. When it says: "It's brimming with energy." or "It has no interest in the other Pokemon.", no eggs will be produced.

Q: My egg wont hatch! How come?
A: Some eggs take more time than others to hatch. Normally, 5,120 steps are required to hatch. There are some exceptions, though. Here's a list:

  • 1,280 steps: Magikarp
  • 2,560 steps: Togepi, Cleffa, Pichu, Igglybuff
  • 3,840 steps: Caterpie, Geodude, Hoothoot, Ledyba, Pidgey, Rattata, Sentret, Spearow, Spinarak, Weedle, Zubat
  • 6,400 steps: Elekid, Heracross, Magby, Mantine, Misdreavus, Mr. Mime, Onix, Pinsir, Scyther, Skarmory, Smoochum, Tyrogue
  • 7,680 steps: Kabuto, Omanyte
  • 8,960 steps: Aerodactyl, Eevee
  • 10,240 steps: Chansey, Dratini, Lapras, Larvitar, Snorlax, Unown
  • All Pokemon who aren't mentioned here take 5,120 steps.

Q: Do the odds for having a shiny offspring rise when you put 2 shinies on day-care together?
A: No. They wont even make eggs because they're related. This means their defence, speed and special DV are the same.

Q: I hatched dozens of eggs and I still don't have a shiny one! Did I do something wrong?
A: Probably not. 1 chance out of 64 is good but not perfect, ya know? I hatched about 150 Cubone eggs and still don't have a shiny one. I got bored, put Abra in daycare and the second eggs hatched into a shiny one already! Its still a big deal of luck, that's for sure.

Q: What's your real name?
A: Doesn't matter and I won't tell it anyway.

Q: What shinies do you have?
A: For the moment I have Gyarados (met), Steelix (met as onix), Golem (met as graveler), Ditto (via the trick), Umbreon (bred), Espeon (bred), Flareon (bred), Vaporeon (bred), Jolteon (bred), Hoothoot (bred) and Alakazam (bred). Updates will follow. (On my Ruby game I have a shiny Hariyama)

Q: What are the odds for a [insert pokemon name] to be (fe)male?
A: There are a lot of sites with this kind of info. The list is a bit too long to post here.

Q: My name is [insert name]! I have a shiny [insert pokemon name], a shiny [insert pokemon name], etc.
A: Nice, but not interested! Only post when you have a question or problem.

Q: Does these things work on the Ruby/Sapphire games?
A: No, they don't! On Ru/Sa, shinyness has nothing to do anymore with DVs, sorry. So you cant breed them anymore.
